FAQs

TMF Landscape Design

  • Do water features work year-round on Long Island or do they need to be shut down in winter?

On Long Island, most ponds and waterfalls are winterized before freezing temperatures set in. Our landscape designer will properly shut down, protect pumps and plumbing, and prepare your feature so it's ready to restart in spring. Some pondless waterfalls can run longer into colder months, depending on setup.

  • What's the difference between a pond and a pondless water feature and which is better for my backyard?

A traditional pond creates a living ecosystem with fish and aquatic plants. A pondless water feature gives you the sound and beauty of moving water without standing water, making it lower maintenance and ideal for smaller yards or families with young children. • Will a backyard pond attract mosquitoes?

No! Ponds from our landscape designer come with moving water, filtration, and beneficial bacteria that actually discourage mosquitoes. Stagnant water attracts them; a professionally installed ecosystem pond does not.

  • How do you prevent water features from leaking or shifting on Long Island's soil conditions?

Our landscape designer accounts for Long Island's sandy soil and freeze-thaw cycles by properly compacting the base, using commercial-grade liners, underlayment, and reinforced edging to prevent settling and shifting over time.

  • Can landscape lighting really increase home value or is it just aesthetic?

Professionally designed LED landscape lighting enhances curb appeal, improves safety, deters intruders, and highlights architectural and landscape features, all of which can increase perceived home value and usability of outdoor spaces. Call our landscape lighting company today!

  • How long does LED landscape lighting last and what is the maintenance like?

Modern LED systems typically last 15-20 years from our landscape lighting company. We use low-voltage, energy-efficient fixtures designed to withstand coastal Long Island weather, with minimal maintenance required beyond occasional adjustments and bulb replacements. Depending on the LED lighting systems, there are various systems that have an expected lifespan. The more affordable systems have LED bulbs that must be replaced periodically. Higher-end lighting systems are manufactured with bulbs that are built into the light fixture, which do not get changed

  • Is artificial turf safe for pets and kids?

Yes! Our landscape designer installs high-quality, pet-friendly artificial turf with proper drainage and antimicrobial infill. It eliminates mud, reduces allergens, and holds up to heavy use, which is perfect for Long Island families and dog owners who are constantly picking up waste.

  • Does artificial turf get too hot in the summer?

Quality turf products are designed with heat-reducing technology from our landscape designer. While any surface can warm up in direct sun, proper infill, irrigation access, and strategic placement help keep temperatures manageable during Long Island summers.

  • How do you choose the right shrubs and trees for Long Island's climate?

Our landscape designer selects plantings based on USDA hardiness zones, soil type, sun exposure, deer resistance, and salt tolerance, especially important in coastal Long Island communities.

  • Can you combine water features, lighting and plantings into one cohesive design?

Absolutely. The best outdoor spaces are designed as a complete system. Our landscape designer integrates waterscapes, accent lighting, turf, trees, and seasonal plantings into a unified landscape design that looks beautiful day and night.
